Places in the Memoir
The story of Stetho in Sevagram unfolds in a small corner of central India—a place most maps overlook. Sevagram is a village seven kilometres from Wardha in Maharashtra. Since 1969, it has been home to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, founded by Dr Sushila Nayar. I came here in 1982 to begin my career as a young physician. Although much of my professional life unfolded in Sevagram, this memoir travels far beyond the village—to my childhood, family, mentors, friendships, travels, and the experiences that shaped my life.
