Stepping down after fourteen years, a return to teaching and the bedside, and the quiet archival work that filled the years the administrator’s chair once took.
The arithmetic itself, though, carries an old joke at my expense. My official date of birth is 15 August 1956; my real one is 15 August 1957 — the year my father quietly had corrected at the Nagar Parishad in 1973 so I could enter medical college a year early, a story told in full in the opening chapter of this book. It felt, at the time, like nothing more than a technicality set right.
